Peer Advisors

Peer advisors are History undergraduates who serve as a resource for questions about the major or minor, departmental resources and policies, and community events. 

Baird Johnson

As a senior history major, Baird is immersed in the Atlantic World of the late eighteenth century – specifically the political and philosophical origins of American Democracy. He is currently writing an honors thesis on the ideological differences underlying the ratification of the Constitution. He hails from New York City, is the Editor-in-Chief of Herodotus, a Stanford Constitutional Law Center Undergraduate Fellow, and a Gilder Lehrman College Fellow. Baird has served as a Research Assistant on multiple projects, studied British intellectual history in Oxford, and published papers in historical journals as well as online forums. Novia Liu

Novia is a junior studying the history of the American Founding. In particular, she hopes to understand how different conceptions of government shaped the creation and early interpretation of the United States Constitution. Recently, Novia served as a research assistant and studied abroad in Paris. While home in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington, she worked in the municipal archives and completed a project on the ratification debates, for which she received a Stanford Small Grant. She is the Managing Editor of Herodotus, a Stanford Constitutional Law Center Undergraduate Fellow, and 2023 Gilder Lehrman College Fellow. When she’s not in the History Corner, Novia can be found at the Red Barn riding for the Stanford Equestrian Team. Whether you’re interested in pursuing historical research, have questions about our major/minor, or just want to learn more about history at Stanford, she would love to chat.

 

Anna Moller

Anna is a junior from Los Angeles studying history and political science. At the moment, she’s interested in the religions of Medieval Europe and water law in the American West. Anna has worked as a TA for American Sign Language (come say hi if you want to learn!), a volunteer college advisor for Matriculate, and a research assistant in the history department. This summer, she worked with the American Bar Association’s immigration department in Washington, D.C. to promote the rights of immigrants in ICE detention. In her free time, Anna enjoys hiking, backpacking, playing tennis, and exploring new neighborhoods in SF and LA. Ethan Strombeck

Ethan is a senior studying history, with a focus on America’s place in the globalized economy of the 19th century. He is currently writing his honors thesis on the labor and migration of Chilean miners in California during the Gold Rush era. This past year, Ethan assisted in the creation of the Doing Colonial History syllabus, studied abroad in the Santiago Overseas Program, and completed a major grant over the summer. Outside of the history department, Ethan is president of the quizbowl club, and they spend their free time reading, playing piano, listening to classical music, and learning German. Jessica Susanto

Jessica Susanto is a junior from Southern California, majoring in History and minoring in Human Rights. She transferred to Stanford in 2022 and previously attended Fullerton College, a community college. She is particularly interested in women’s history and 20th-century U.S. history. At Stanford, Jessica serves as Co-President of the Southeast Asia Forum, a Transfer 101 Co-lead, and a mentor for Women & Youth Supporting Each Other (WYSE), a program for local middle school girls. She is passionate about human rights, women’s advocacy, and educational policy and plans to become a lawyer, specializing in human rights law in the Southeast Asia region (where her parents are from). In her free time, Jessica enjoys reading historical fiction, exploring new ice cream shops, watching episodes of Modern Family, and keeping up with the latest skincare trends on Tiktok.
