Philip Stern (Duke University) will give a talk titled Empire, Incorporated: The Corporations that Built British Colonialism.
Philip J. Stern, currently Associate Professor of History at Duke University, writes and teaches about intellectual, political, business, and legal histories of the British Empire. Stern is the author of The Company-State: Corporate Sovereignty and the Early Modern Foundations of the British Empire in India (Oxford, 2011) and, most recently, Empire, Incorporated: The Corporations that Built British Colonialism (Belknap/Harvard, 2023), as well as two co-edited collections and nearly three dozen articles, essays, and chapters touching themes such as the constitution of colonial governance, the role of private enterprise in producing modern sovereignty and international law, and the ways in which cartography and exploration shaped European imperialism, among many others.
