Adam Rainbolt

B.A., Trinity College Dublin
Master's, Late Antique and Byzantine Studies, University of Oxford

Adam is a first-year PhD student interested in gender construction in the Late Antique and early medieval Mediterranean. A California native, he is coming back home for his PhD after earning a BA at Trinity College Dublin and a master's degree in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at the University of Oxford.

His work centers on hagiographical representations of diverse masculinities across the Syriac and Latin traditions, and how the Early Middle Ages represent a time of transition and variance for gender norms, particularly in monastic circles. He is deeply passionate about embracing interdisciplinary methods to explore the medieval past, and has worked for for a number of journals (including the Journal of Medieval History, Dumbarton Oaks Papers, I Tatti Studies, Harvard Ukrainian Studies, and Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies) and museums (including the National Gallery of Ireland and Oxford's Ashmolean Museum).
