Amanda Coate is a PhD candidate in History at Stanford University, where she studies early modern Europe. Her research focuses primarily on the cultural and intellectual histories of 16th- and 17th-century Britain, Germany, and France. In her work, she has investigated ideas about cannibalism (particularly starvation cannibalism), science and medicine in Britain and Ireland, and human-animal interactions. Her ongoing dissertation research examines early modern European understandings of hunger and food scarcity.
