Andrew Elmore is a PhD candidate in East Asian history. His current research traces the mutually entwined cultural history of masculinity and age in twentieth-century China. It reveals disruptive changes in socially constructed masculine life stages--such as boyhood, fatherhood, and old age--as well as evolving expectations of masculine deportment from the end of the Qing dynasty to the present day. Drawing on archival sources, textbooks, muscle magazines, propaganda posters, and nursing home pamphlets, his work examines how individuals and institutions in China attempted to define age-appropriate masculine behavior, while engaging in broader transnational debates about gender, identity, and modernity.
