Ayanda Mahlaba is a PhD student in History in the Africa field. He was born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Mahlaba's research centers on the intellectual, literary, and cultural histories in mid-19th to late 20th century South Africa. He focuses specifically on the Black press and is interested in knowledge production and literary experiments in bilingual, African-owned newspapers in South Africa in this period. An avid reader of African & African diasporic literatures, Mahlaba also enjoys writing poetry and listening to music.
