I am a U.S. historian, focused on the intellectual history of liberalism, spatial economics, and social movements. My forthcoming book, Land and Liberty: Henry George, the Single Tax Movement and Modern Liberalism (Johns Hopkins University Press), tells the story of how Henry George’s critique of urban rent in 1870s San Francisco paved the way for a “New Liberalism” that embraced the idea of social property. In the future, I intend to explore the roots of American populism in rural economic disparities.
