Ciel Haviland

Ciel is a PhD student in the History of Science, fascinated by human-plant relationships. She focuses on Early Modern North American and European understandings of the plant world as well as the overlapping concepts of science and aesthetics. Her MA thesis focused on the botanizing of women and the implications of empire in the development of science through the archives of Elizabeth Gwillim. She produced a short series podcast, Letters Home, on these archives and is interested in combining her academic efforts with public history modalities. She is currently co-coordinating the Stanford Environmental and Climate History Workshop and Engaged Plant Humanities with the Fiber Optics Research Workshop.
