I'm a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of History at Stanford University. I'm a historian of the Portuguese empire specialized in colonial Brazil and a digital humanist with a broad interest in the use of different computational methods in humanistic research. My research focus is on spatial practices that shaped European empire-building in Latin America. In my dissertation--Empire in the Backlands: The Interiorization of the Portuguese Colonization in Brazil--I examine patterns of mobility of ordinary people in the remote backlands of South America. I demonstrate that the itinerant lives of many people in the edges of colonial society created connections across Brazil's fragmented territory, bounding together distant places and integrating the remote backlands to the Portuguese empire.
