My work focuses on history education – especially in the field of world history – as well as the social history of Africa. Among the 11 books I have written and edited, I am proudest of Abina and the Important Men, which won the 2014 James Harvey Robinson Prize.  I believe strongly in producing for the public, and have produced a number of documentaries and historical films which have garnered festival prizes.  I am also deeply committed to teaching, and in 2020 I was the recipient of the American Historical Association’s Eugene Asher Distinguished Teaching Award.
