Vivian Yan is a doctoral candidate focusing on 20th century United States history. She studies the intersections of liberal and conservative thought, politics, and style among Chinese and Japanese American communities in her dissertation, tentatively titledĀ "A Spectrum Apart: Conservatism in Asian America, 1920-1990."

Her other research interests include transpacific racial politics, travel, and mobility. She is a co-founder of the Critical Orientations to Race and Ethnicity workshop at the Stanford Humanities Center.
