"Pacific Empire" as a Useful Analytical Category

This essay (pp.28-31) is part of a forum convened by the Pacific Empires Working Group, where historians of the Pacific and Japan come together to explore what constitutes the Pacific as a region shaped by American and Japanese imperial interests. Here I offer my preliminary thoughts on the usefulness of applying the concept of "Pacific Empire" to the case of Japan.
