Undergraduate Grants

We are committed to support Stanford undergraduate students' career development in historical research and adjacent fields.  We provide two types of grants to help Stanford undergraduates to draw on and extend the skills and interests that they have developed in Stanford History classes.  Priority is given to History majors and minors when allocating the funding.

  • Summer Internship Grants provide up to $3,000 for Stanford students to draw on and extend the skills and interests that they have developed in Stanford History classes.
    • Applicants identify their own internship arrangement and are advised to use appropriate due diligence in vetting the internship position. In applying for this grant, applicants release Stanford University and the Department of History from any liability that may arise in connection to this internship opportunity.
    • Applicants must have taken, or is taking, at least one Stanford History course at the time of their application. They must maintain active Stanford undergraduate enrollment status during the proposed internship period.
    • If the internship requires domestic or international travel, applicants should consult the Stanford University's undergraduate student travel policy and note any contingency planning or exception requests that they may need to submit.
    • To apply, please email the completed  application form (describing the internship and its engagement with historical questions) and a formal letter from the internship organization (including the internship supervisor's  name and contact information) to Kai Dowding (History Undergraduate Student Services Officer) at kdowding [at] stanford.edu (kdowding[at]stanford[dot]edu).
    • The  application deadline is 5:00pm Friday, May 23, 2025, with decisions announced by early June.

  • Honors Research Grant provide funding to Stanford History majors during their senior year to help with the expenses related to their honor's thesis. Students may apply for one grant to support their thesis research such as traveling to an archive (subject to the University travel policy) or paying for digitization/imaging of archival materials.
