Professor Rodrigue becomes honorary citizen of Didymoteicho

Aron Rodrigue was made an honorary citizen of the northern Greek city of Didymoteicho (older names Dimetoka and Demotica)  on May 5, 2023, honoring his research and publications on the Sephardi Jews of the Ottoman Balkans and Asia Minor. He was given the key to the city by the mayor during the international symposium on the “Jews in Demotica before and after the Holocaust” commemorating the 80th anniversary of the deportation of the Jewish community to Auschwitz in 1943. He also delivered the keynote. Aron Rodrigue’s first scholarly article was on the history of Jews of Demotica, the name for the locality used by its Jews. He himself has roots in this city from one side of his family.
