Mariana Calvo

Mariana Calvo is a fifth-year PhD candidate in the Transnational, International, and Global history field. Her dissertation examines the role of private corporations as agents of colonialism in Latin America and beyond. At Stanford, she is active in the Environmental and Climate History Workshop and previously served as a graduate representative in the department. In 2024–2025, she held the Georges Lurcy Fellowship in Paris, where she researched French banks’ involvement in Peru’s guano trade and the role of concessionary companies in French Equatorial Africa.  She has presented her work at the Society for the History of Technology and the European Society for Environmental History.

Outside of academia, Mariana is passionate about photography and journalism. Before Stanford, she worked as a freelance journalist in Medellín, Colombia, and New York City, covering migration and drug trafficking.
